In 2007, there were an estimated 399,000 reported home structure fires and 2,865 associated civilian deaths in the United States.

Fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you as little as two minutes to escape safely once the alarm sounds. Your ability to get out depends on advance warning from smoke alarms, and advance home fire escape planning that everyone in your family is familiar with and has practiced.

Avoid candles during outages

Flashlights, extra batteries, and battery-powered lighting should be on hand for emergency lighting.

Candles Aren’t Safe at Night!

NFPA discourages the use of candles in bedrooms and other areas where people may fall asleep.

Supervise Children

Store candles, matches, and lighters high and out of children’s sight and reach, preferably in a locked cabinet.

Tips for safe candle use

  • Always stay nearby when candles are burning, and keep them out of reach of children to prevent accidents.
  • Place candles at least one foot away from flammable items like curtains or bedding, and use sturdy holders on uncluttered surfaces to avoid tipping.
  • Before lighting, trim wicks to ¼ inch and keep hair and clothing safely away from the flame.
  • Extinguish candles before they burn too low, and be careful not to splatter hot wax when putting them out.
