Fire Prevention Checklist

Each October, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and fire departments across North America observe Fire Prevention week to mark the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and to promote public awareness of fire safety.

Here are some tips for you to consider:

Tips for safe candle use:

  • Always stay in the room where candles are being burned.
  • Keep lit candles at least one foot away from anything combustible (i.e. curtains, mattresses, etc.).
  • Keep candles away from children.
  • Use sturdy candle holders that won't tip or burn.
  • Burn candles on sturdy uncluttered surfaces.
  • Trim candle wicks to one-quarter inch before lighting.
  • When lighting candles, keep your hair and clothing away from the flame.
  • Extinguish candles when they burn to within two inches of their holder.
  • Be careful not to splatter hot wax when extinguishing a candle.

Avoid using candles during power outages. Flashlights, extra batteries, and battery-powered lighting should be on hand for emergency lighting.

Candles are dangerous nightlights! NFPA discourages the use of candles in bedrooms and other areas where people may fall asleep.

Supervise Children. Store candles, matches, and lighters high and out of children's sight and reach, preferably in a locked cabinet.
