About Us

The Borough of West Reading, its Council, Mayor, and Departments wish to welcome you to the official web site for the Borough of West Reading!

West Reading Borough has been an incorporated political subdivision of the Commonwealth since March 18, 1907. We are proud to be the very first Main Street Community in Berks County and boast a rich and proud tradition.

West Reading is in the center of many new and exciting projects underway in Berks County. Over the next few years, West Reading will be host to substantial redevelopment. Mostly centered on the former Vanity Fair Outlet complex that straddles the Borough's western border with Wyomissing, the historic knitting mill site will feature new corporate headquarter space interspersed with additional commercial opportunities for retail and restaurants.  West Reading is proud to be home to the largest employer in Berks, "Tower Health" as well as the largest novelty candy maker in the world, "Palmer Candies".

Borough Hall is located at 500 Chestnut Street in West Reading, Pennsylvania and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Located in the Borough Hall are the Administration Offices including the Borough Manager, our Police Department, Code Enforcement Department which also handles Zoning as well as the Treasurer, and Recreation Coordinator's Offices. Our Public Works Department works out of the Borough Maintenance Facility at 1st and Chestnut Street. The West Reading Fire Company is located at 223 Playground Drive, right near the Borough Swimming Pool and Playground.

The original West Reading Borough Hall was built in 1927 as a replica of the Delaware State House. In 2000 an addition was added to the structure as it is today.

The Borough is governed by a council-manager form of government. There are seven Council Members and a Mayor who are elected by the voters. The Chief Administrative Officer is a Borough Manager who is appointed by Council and responsible for day-to-day operations within the Borough. The Mayor is in charge of the Police Department.
